Wayne Thiebaud-Inspired Ice Cream Paintings
The second graders learned about American painter Wayne Thiebaud and viewed a collection of his paintings of ice cream, candy, cakes, and other sweets! They painted a picture of their favorite flavors of ice cream and enjoyed adding the "hot fudge" with a mixture of brown paint and glue.
Piete Mondrian-Inspired Animals
I presented a slideshow about Dutch artist Piet Mondrian, focusing on his use of primary colors and his grid of black vertical and horizontal lines in his artwork. I showed the students examples of his paintings and they were shocked at how simple and childlike his art was. I had each student choose an animal they would draw using a Mondrian-inspired approach. They drew their animal with pencil and broke their picture up into a grid of lines. They went over all of their lines with black Sharpie and used the primary colors to fill in their grid with markers.
Sailboat Collages
Dinosaur Fossils (Salt Dough)
Cardinal Paintings
Christmas Tree Ornaments
The second graders had fun creating a Christmas tree from Popsicle sticks to hang as an ornament for the holiday. They used green and brown markers to add color to the sticks, glued them together, then glued sparkles onto the tree as ornaments. They also decorated a nice gift bag for their parents :)
Snowmen Families
Even though we have lucked out with weather in the 60's during late November, the second graders are getting ready for a snowy winter as you can see by their snowmen family paintings! They sketched their picture, outlined it with Sharpie, painted with watercolors, and then made their own miniature snowflakes from paper!
Eric Carle-Inspired Animals
After reading “The Tiny Seed” by Eric Carle, the second graders created their own Eric-Carle inspired collages in Art class. They watched a short video clip of how Eric Carle created his illustrations, then they painted paper and cut out shapes to form an animal of their own!
Dancing Skeletons
The second graders constructed dancing skeletons from Q-tips. It was fun to see the variety of poses they chose!
Watercolor Flowers Inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe
I showed the second graders some of Georgia O'Keeffe's magnified flower paintings and took the students to the school's garden for some inspiration! They sat by a group of flowers of their choice and sketched a magnified version of a flower on their paper. They enjoyed adding color with watercolors and creating a background.
God Gives Us the Gift of the Eucharist
At the beginning of each school year, the students' first art project is a piece relating to the school's theme. This year our theme is "God Gives Us Many Gifts." The second graders created self portraits from paper and depicted the gift of the Eucharist in their pictures by using a symbol of a chalice.
These projects will be hung around the school as a border and will remain all year to remind us of the many gifts we are blessed with.

ARTWORK BELOW THIS POINT IS FROM THE 2010-11 SCHOOL YEAR.
Origami Puppets
The fourth graders learned how to make origami puppets. I showed them step-by-step how to make a "fortune teller" and then they used construction paper to add eyes, a nose, mouth, tounge, teeth, ears, fangs, etc. to their creature!
Thiebaud-Inspired Ice Cream Paintings!

Mother's Day Flower Pots
The second graders sponge painted flower pots for Mother's Day and hand painted flowers around the outside.
Sea Turtles... with Texture!
The seconds graders did an excellent job drawing their sea turtles and creating a design on their shell. They outlined their dawing with crayon and painted with watercolors. Before their paint dried, the students covered the "water" with plastic wrap, creating a wonderful texture!
Sea Hores
The students used oil pastels to color their beautiful drawings of a seahorse underwater. After adding sand and plant life, they chose some seashells to glue to their picture.
3D Paper Ring Birds
The second graders used strips of colored paper to create these beautiful bird pictures. They glued the strips into rings and arranged them on their paper in the shape of a bird. Gluing the rings to the paper was the real challenge....a messy challenge!
Lenten Crosses
The second graders made Lenten crosses during this time of prayer and sacrifice in preparation for Easter. They use glue/water mixture to cover their cross with tissue paper squares and glued it to a shad of purple for their background. They used construction paper to make an Easter lily for the center of their cross. The lily represents purity, grace, and hope. They decorated their background with white colored pencils and paint.
Potato-Print Shamrocks
The second graders read an Irish folktale in library in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. In Art class, they used potatoes to create prints of hearts, forming them into a shamrock. They could decorate their picture with glitter, foam shapes, and gems.
Polar Bear Texture Paintings
We experimented with different textures while creating these adorable polar bear paintings! The students used watercolors to paint their sky and ice. They sprinkled salt on their sky while it was still wet to create texture. They covered the ice with a piece of plastic wrap before it dried to create an icy texture.

Duck & Swan Drawings
I introduced the second graders to an oil pastel resist technique as they created a picture of either a duck or a swan. They followed a directed drawing on the board and added color to their whole picture except the water. They washed over the drawing with watered-down blue tempera paint. The oil in the oil pastel resists the water in the paint, causing the pastels to show through.
Dinosaur Fossils
The second graders shared what they learned about dinosaurs and the creation of fossils. They each made their own fossil using salt dough and plastic figurines (dinosaurs, bugs, seashells, etc.) to make prints.
Sailboat Collages
The second graders created a mixed media picture of boats on the water. First, they used watercolors to paint a background/sky for their picture. Then they used mod podge to glue various shades of blue tissue paper squares to the bottom of their picture to create water. After it was dry, they cut out sailboats (or pirate ships) from construction paper and could use wrapping paper scraps for the sails. Some students added birds with a Sharpie and painted clouds with white paint for a finishing touch.
Cardinal Paintings
The second graders used acrylic paint on construction paper to create these beautiful cardinals! They used a Q-tip and white paint for the snow in the background.
Popsicle Stick Christmas Trees
The second graders had fun creating a Christmas tree from Popsicle sticks to hang as an ornament for the holiday. They used green and brown markers to add color to the sticks, glued them together, then glued gems onto the tree. I hot glued a star and ribbon of their choice to their ornament.
Barnyard Collages
The second graders created their own barnyard collages from construction paper. I showed them how to create a barn with opening doors and they cut animals, fences, clouds, etc. to add to their picture.
Indians
We talked about Native Americans and learned about their clothing (war shirts, buckskin dresses, moccasins, headdresses, etc.) I showed the second graders some pictures/posters of Native Americans and we discussed what kinds of fabrics, shapes, patterns, etc. we found in their clothing. They each created a portrait of a Native American using construction paper, markers, and feathers. They created a headband, incorporating some type of pattern with shapes. They also designed the clothing with careful consideration of keeping it similar to authentic Native American costumes.
Eric Carle-Inspired Collages
The second graders do a unit on Eric Carle in their classroom so in Art, they create their own Eric Carle-inspired collages. We begin by looking at some of his popular story books, “The Tiny Seed,” “From Head to Toe,” “Hungry Caterpillar,” etc. and we pay close attention to how he created his pictures by painting large sheets of paper with various colors, using many techniques, textures, then cutting the papers into the shapes he needed to form his picture.
We discuss Eric Carle’s reoccurring theme of nature throughout his books and the students created a collage with nature as the subject. The students had the opportunity to sponge paint, splatter paint, mix colors, stamp, dot, smear, etc. to create many different textures on white paper. They cut shapes from the dried paintings to collage onto paper.

Glue & Pastel Flowers & Vases
This is one of my favorite projects to do with the second grade. I set up vases of flowers on each table and have the students do a pencil sketch of it on black paper. They trace over their lines with a glue bottle and once it's dry, they add color with chalk pastels. I encourage them to create designs and patterns in their vase so each picture is unique!
Desert Silhouettes
We talked about warm colors and reviewed the term "silhouette". The students looked through books about deserts and chose which plants/animals they wanted to include in their picture. They used yellow, orange, and red to paint their entire paper and black to create their silhouettes.
Dancing Q-tip Skeletons
The second graders used Q-tips to create a “dancing skeleton” on a black sheet of construction paper. Each student got a handful of Q-tips to arrange on their paper and glue down to construct their skeleton. I posted a large skeleton decoration on the board so they could study the formation of the bones. To create smaller “bones” for the fingers and toes, they bent the Q-tips in half and twisted them until they snapped in half. They created the head of the skeleton from white paper and drew on a face with a black Sharpie.
It was fun to see the variety of poses the students chose!

Bean Mosaics
I found several packs of chipboard shapes in the dollar isle at Michael's one day so I stocked up and used them for bean mosaics in art class. I had each student choose a shape and use a paintbrush to cover the chipboard with glue. I set out bowls of several types of beans in a variety of colors the students could use.
Father's Day Origami Cards
For Father's Day we made shirt and tie cards. Each student chose a color paper for the card and a piece of scrapbook paper or wrapping paper I pulled out from the closet. I showed them how to make an origami tie and cut and fold edges of their card so the tie fit easily under the collar. Some of the students even drew a pocket or cut one out of scrap paper.
